Ladies and Gentlemen after Day 1 of the National Matchplay Finals in Douglas County Cork Old County will have 2 players advancing to the 2nd round on Sunday morning.

George McGreal put on a masterful performance this morning to win 7&6 against Liam Myers from the St Anne's Club in Cork. George went 5 up after the first 12 holes and was always in control from then on going 6 up after 18, 5 up after 24, 5 up after 30 to then close out the match 7&6. Well done George excellent win. 

George will play Anthony Galvin from the Tullamore Club, Co Offaly at 9am Sunday morning.

Stephen Murray started his match in the afternoon against hot favourite with the bookies and champion from a couple of years ago, Kieran Earls of Bruff in Limerick.  Stephen made a good start to the match going 2 up after 6 holes but Kieran came storming back to go 1 up after 12. After 18 holes Stephen was again in the lead turning 1 up. From then on Stephen got stronger and strong going 2 up after 24 holes and 4 up after 30 holes to finally close out the match with a 5&4 victory. Fantastic performance Stephen, what a win.

Stephen will play Kevin Knox from the Gowran Club, Co Kilkenny at 9.40am Sunday morning in his last 32 match.

Unfortunately for Tom O'Reilly he had to concede a walkover after spending the night in St James hospital with a family member who had  taken ill. We hope for a speedy recovery Tom, best wishes.

Well done to the 3 other Dublin qualifiers, Anthony Malone and Chris Gallagher from Lucan and Aaron O'Droghneain from Glenville who all made it through to the 2nd round on Sunday morning.

Best of luck George and Stephen and the Dublin lads tomorrow as you enter marathon Sunday.

Ladies and Gentlemen one of the the biggest weekends of the Pitch and Putt calendar takes place this weekend, with the National Matchplay Finals 2022 taking place over the June bank holiday weekend in Douglas, Co Cork.

Delighted to say we have 3 of our top seniors among the field of 64 gents.

At 10.05 a.m. Saturday morning George McGreal will tee off in match 14 against Liam Myers from the St Anne's Club in Co Cork. Always a difficult match playing an experienced Cork competitor in his home county but George is one of the toughest matchplayers around and will relish the challenge. 

Then just before lunch at 12.50 in Match 21 Tom O'Reilly will play Donal Tarpey from the Mellows Club, Co Galway. If Tom can play to form on the day he will have high hopes of coming through this one and hopefully set up a Sunday morning clash with the winner of Eoin Keating (Douglas) or Patrick Mitchell (Ardnacrusha).

Stephen Murray has the biggest challenge of our 3 Old County men at 1.30pm in Match 29 as he takes on one of the favourites for the weekend and a recent winner of the event in Kieran Earls from Bruff Co Limerick.  The bookies have Kieran 1/10 to win this match and Stephen at 5/1.  That won't bother Stephen and he will be well up for the challenge ahead.

Ladies and Gentlemen just an update to say Sessions 1 and 2 our now filled in our Christy Broe Scratch Cup for Saturday 11 June 2022. As at now (12 noon June 1st) there are 38 remaining spots in Session 3 between 3pm and 4.30pm.
